The narrator, Buddy, looks back on a particularly beautiful Christmas he spent with his much older cousin. The two spend four days baking fruit cakes and got a little drunk on leftover whiskey. The next day, they chop down a Christmas tree and make each other kites, not knowing this will be the last Christmas they spend together.
