Library Transformation

 

 

On October 25, 2015, a formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the transformed library.

Timeline of the Library Expansion Project  

2015

 
September/October: The parking lot was reconfigured, repaved and striped.  New sidewalks were installed in the lot, as were trees and landscaping.  Terrace and paver work continued.  Final paint, flooring, trim and electrical work happened.  The fixed auditorium seating in the Community Room was installed.  More furniture was delivered and installed throughout the building.  Library materials were removed from the temporary location and delivered to their new home.  The phone service was installed.  Work continued on the reading terrace on the south side of the library.  On Friday, October 9, we opened the doors to the transformed library!  
August: Asphalt paving and landscaping were bid out.  Site work continued.  Work on the terraces began, in addition to the pavers in front of the main entrance.  Mechanical equipment was started up.  More furniture deliveries continued.  Bathroom vanities were installed.  The metal ceilings were installed.  Work began on the parking lot rehab.  The early childhood area mural was installed.  Paint, flooring, trim and electrical work continued.  
July: New high-speed fiber was pulled for upgraded Internet access.  New wiring was done throughout the building, for computers, phones, speakers, cameras and more.  Painting, flooring and wood trim continued.  Plumbing fixtures were installed.  Electrical work happened throughout the building.  Interior windows (“borrowed lites”) were installed.  The property was graded in preparation for plantings.  Furniture delivery began!  
June: Final finishes were reviewed and approved, including paint and flooring samples. Ceiling installations were completed.  Workers began modernizing the elevator.  Painting, bathroom tile work and wood trim installation all began.  Exterior sitework continued.  The design for the early childhood area mural was finalized.  

May: Window installation was finished up, and stucco work was also completed.  Taping and spackling continued throughout the building.  Wiring for audiovisual systems took place, then some ceilings were closed in.  Sitework was done around the property in preparation for new plantings.  Footings were laid for the new terrace! 

 

April: Glass installation was completed in the curtain wall.  EIFS and stucco work continued around the new addition, starting at the back and working around to the front.  Excavation began for the new terrace on the south side of the building.  Installation of windows continued around the building.  Stair railings were installed.  Drywall work continued, and taping/spackling began.   

 

March: Installation of the two-story curtain wall began.  Spray foam continued in the new addition.  Installation of windows began in the original building, which made a huge difference in the amount of light in the building!  Work began on the EIFS (pronounced “ee-fuss”), which is the basis for the stucco application on the second story of the new addition.  The parking lot was trenched in order to connect the new chiller.  Other HVAC equipment was also installed.  Workers continued to put up drywall around the building. 

 

February: Fire sprinkler and duct work was substantially completed.  Spray foam insulation work continued building-wide.  Borrowed lite frames (interior window frames) were delivered and installation began.  Soffit framing occurred throughout the building.  Drywall installation began in the community room.  Contractors began wiring the building for voice and data. 

 

January: Door frames were installed around the first floor.  Spray foam began throughout the building, despite the challenge of winter cold.  Framing continued on the second floor of the library.  Work continued on the retaining wall alongside the hill.  Brickwork began on the columns in the south-facing curtain wall.

 

2014

 

December: Roofing was completed on the new addition. Sills were set for new windows throughout the building. Ducts were installed in the original building, and the new sprinkler system was set in place. Chase walls were framed around the perimeter of the building, which will allow for extra insulation. It's exciting to know the building will be insulated to R40 in the walls and R60 in the ceiling, which will make the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer! Partition walls were also framed throughout the building, so the new spaces are being defined. Work began on the new retaining wall on the west side of the property.

 

November: Roofing was completed on the original building and started on the new addition. Yellow-colored damp-proofing was applied to the second story of the new addition, to keep the building dry during the winter months.  The yellow will eventually be covered by new stucco. Work also began on the replacement of the water main, which required trenching through the parking lot.

October: Roof framing continued and roof decks were set on the new addition.  Framing began for the roof monitors, which will bring much natural light into the new adult library on the second floor.  The masons installed bricks around the first level of the new addition.  The bid for drywall and acoustic work was awarded, and bidding began on spray foam insulation.

September: The walls of the two-story addition went up, and the new mezzanine was poured.  Steel supports were placed in the new addition, preparing for the roof.  A mechanical penthouse was constructed on the existing roof to house HVAC equipment.  A new entrance area was framed out in steel.  The window and door openings were temporarily secured with plywood, to allow for inside work over the winter.  The contract was awarded for doors, and bidding began on drywall and acoustic work.

August: Forms and rebar were set for the new addition's second floor slab, which was poured mid-month. Contracts were awarded for exterior carpentry and fire sprinkler work.

July: The masons began building the concrete block walls around the new addition.  Work also continued on the window openings around the existing building, re-using brick that was removed during demolition.  Steel framing and electrical work also went on inside the building.  The windows and the curtain wall were bid out and awarded this month.

June: Local sitework contractors had much to do, backfilling around the foundation and in the underslab area.  Plumbing and drainage work also was completed under the slab.  Electrical rough-ins took place inside the existing building.  At the end of the month, the new slab was poured.  The concrete columns also went up; these very sturdy columns will hold up the second floor, which will be a poured concrete slab.

May: Construction on the new addition became visible from route 25 as the footings and the foundation were poured for the new addition.  Structural steel work was performed inside the existing building.  The mason began to make openings for the new windows that will be added to the entire building.  Roofing work was awarded.

March/April: After a very long winter, grading began in preparation for the addition on the west side of the building.  This addition will house the new children’s department on the first floor and a new adult department on the second floor.  Plumbing and electrical work were bid out during this time, as well as masonry.  A temporary retaining wall was installed on the west side to stabilize the hill during construction.

January/February: In January 2014, machine demolition began at the library, removing sections of walls that will eventually be filled with windows for increased daylighting in the renovated building.  Bidding on major portions of the work—sitework, concrete, and structural steel—took place at the end of January and into February.

 

2013

 

December: The Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on Saturday, December 7.

October: Construction fence was installed around the property in early October, and a construction trailer was delivered.  In mid-October, abatement and selective interior demolition began.

September: During the week of September 1-8, 2013, the library closed in order to move to temporary quarters for the duration of the renovation project.  This was a team effort by library staff and two different library moving companies (one for collection, one for furniture and shelving.)  On September 9, the library was re-opened at 1241 Middle Country Road in Middle Island, just one mile east of the library building, in the King Kullen Shopping Center.

Library programs began occurring at various locations around the community: Longwood High School, Longwood Junior High School, the Community Services Center behind Yaphank Presbyterian Church, and Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank.

Summer: The library made arrangements to rent space for a temporary library facility in the King Kullen Shopping Center in Middle Island.  Other facilities were sought for library programs.

January: The Central Pine Barrens Commission approved the library's Compatible Growth Area Hardship application.  (Read more)

 
 2012  

October 9: The community approved the bond referendum with a vote of 698 to 394.

October 2: An informational meeting about the project was held at the library.

August: The library board of trustees made a determination of non-significance in regard to SEQRA. (Read more)

The board also passed a resolution requesting that the school conduct a special vote for the approval of a bond to pay for the library expansion and renovation. (Read more)

June/July/August: The library circulated the Expanded EAF prepared by Nelson, Pope and Voorhis. (Read more)

March: The library board of trustees approved the schematic design presented by the design team.  The board also issued a SEQRA resolution at that time. (Read more)

2011

March/April: The library retained Sandpebble Builders to perform an “existing conditions” report about the library.  Also, a building committee was formed, made up of key library staff, trustees and experts in the construction field.

 
 2007 - 2008
