DESCRIPTION: Attempt to stop violence and obtain protection for the abused. Start a proceeding in Family Court by filing a Petition for an Order of Protection in the Family Intake Unit of the Probation Department in Riverhead for east end clients. A prior arrest is not necessary. A Probation Officer will interview you asking the date, time, place and description of the incident and about other recent incidents to establish a pattern of behavior.

DESCRIPTION: Legal problems handled involve basic needs such as housing, health care, food and income. Focus is on entitlement programs such as public assistance, Medicaid, food stamps and SSI as well as on housing problems involving evictions, foreclosures and poor housing conditions. Specialized units include Mental Health Law Project, SSI/Disability Advocacy Project, Domestic Violence Project, HIV Advocacy, and PLAN Project (legal assistance to individuals and families living with cancer). These units are based in our Islandia office, although they do provide service to the east end. Our other office is located at One Helen Keller Way, Hempstead, NY 11550 (services Nassau County).
